TedX Wilmington Fireside
Eric Okdeh speaks about select mural projects during his 20 year career of community based muralmaking. He focuses on the work that came about through collaboration with incarcerated populations and people in recovery.
Beyond the Wall Series
One of the most troubling issues in the United States today is the rapid growth of the prison population. Beyond the Wall is shining a light on this problem. The project, initiated by muralist Eric Okdeh and the incarcerated men participating in the Mural Arts Program inside SCI Graterford, included community discussion groups held throughout the City, a one day seminar on the issue at the Community College of Philadelphia, a poster series by artist Josh McPhee exhibited at SEPTA sites and on Regional Rail cars, and a new series of interviews and mini murals by Okdeh.
Family Interrupted
For many, the justice system is a one-way street, where loved ones are locked away, serving time in isolation without outlets to express their emotions, offer regrets, or make amends to the communities and families they have harmed.
My multidisciplinary project, Family Interrupted, sparks a dialogue around the impact of incarceration on families and the community at large through the mural-making process. Featuring input from inmates, probationers, and ex-offenders, including the State Correctional Institution at Graterford, Philadelphia Prison System, adjudicated youth, and community and family members.
